Avoid Mosquitoes on Your Property

15 Ways to Help You Avoid Mosquitoes At Home

Okay… so we can never totally eliminate our exposure to mosquitoes, but we can help to reduce our contact with them whilst we are at home.

By employing a few simple techniques we can actively contribute to ensuring we encounter fewer of these pesky critters. Try to apply some or all of the techniques below at your home environment to minimise your exposure to mosquitoes.

How To Repel Mosquitoes

  1. If you are outside on your patio use a large fan to hamper the mosquitoes' flight.
  2. Wear long sleeved shirts or sweaters and long trousers to cover up your skin.
  3. Make sure to keep your pool clean and topped up with chlorine. Also do not allow water to collect on your pool covers.
  4. Remove containers (that may collect rainwater) from your property… this includes jars, buckets and any other type of container that may fill up when the rain comes. Any standing water on your property (even a relatively small amount such as a cup's worth) can provide an opportunity for mosquitoes to breed.
  5. Change the water in your pet bowls and bird baths often.
  6. If you have a pond or stream in your garden, be sure that it doesnt become overgrown with plants and vegetation.
  7. If you do have a pond, look into getting some mosquito fish to help reduce mosquito numbers.
  8. Clear your guttering regularly.
  9. Cracks and holes in the ground outside of your home may collect water. Make sure there are no such potential hazards on your property… and if there are, fill them in.
  10. Stay out of shaded areas and other places where mosquitoes may be taking a rest
  11. Try to organize your outdoor activities around the times of day when mosquitoes are not so active: mosquitoes are more active at dawn and dusk.
  12. Use lights in your garden that do not attract mosquitoes… one such light is the "Bug Light" made by General Electric, which is incandescent and so is less likely to attract these pesky bugs.
  13. Ensure that any mesh you have on your doors and windows is not damaged.
  14. Advise your neighbours to take the above steps on their properties…. if your neighboor is unknowingly creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes, you could be affected.
  15. Finally, of course… use an effective mosquito repellent!
