Squirrel Repellent… Get Squirrels Out Of Your Home!

Aggressive Squirrel RepellentSquirrels. To look at them you’d think they were the cutest little innocent creatures alive. With their bushy tails and sparkling eyes, squirrels appear to be quite harmless. To humans they probably aren’t a threat but these little pretty creatures can wreak havoc in homes and gardens.  You can find squirrels all over North America: you’ll see them in any kind of forest, (coniferous, pine, mixed and/or hardwood) and they tend to show up around many residential areas too.

The squirrel is a very quick little creature that scoots around causing all sorts of damage to people’s property. They like to hang out in attics and in walls. They also like to get into people’s flower and vegetable gardens. So for many people, the squirrel is not a welcome site and some type of squirrel repellent is a necessity.

Controlling squirrels can be a difficult task. Of course an individual could use trapping methods or shooting. However there are other means of deterring squirrels without causing them physical damage. You can use a squirrel repellent to send them back to the forest and leave your property alone.

Squirrels like to climb trees. Once they are up there, they can damage the tree and perhaps prevent it from showing its true potential. To prevent a squirrel from climbing your trees, you might try wrapping the tree trunks with aluminum. This is one squirrel repellent idea that will hinder them from climbing trees near your home.

One squirrel repellent that seems to be quite effective is hot pepper. Squirrels do not like the smell or taste of hot pepper such as cayenne. It’s suggested to plant flower bulbs, coated with hot pepper. This will send those pesky squirrels in the other direction.

What Squirrel Repellent Do Gardeners Use?

Black Squirrel RepellentSome gardeners often make their own squirrel repellent by soaking a handful of cayenne peppers in boiling water. After soaking the peppers overnight, they drain them, add a squirt of dish liquid and use this formulation as a deterrent. This kind of squirrel repellent is safe to spray on garden plants and is non-toxic so it won’t actually hurt the squirrel but rather send them to look for another feeding ground or hiding spot. To repel squirrels from your attic or buildings, you might want to try soaking rags with ammonia and placing them in entry ways or areas where you are aware squirrels tend to congregate.

Another suggestion for squirrel repellent is to use mothballs. I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of this technique but I can advise that mothballs are toxic if ingested so keep them away from your kids or pets.

If you have problems with squirrels you are probably willing to try just about anything to get rid of these tormenting animals. To be honest you should use a tried and tested squirrel repellent that is proven to be effective. See our Rodent Repellent Category for specific squirrel repellent product reviews.
